THE GYP UK STORY

GYP UK founder – DR Juliet Osei-Owusu PhD CChem MRSC

Who:  I am a self-motivated, meticulous and highly analytical individual with excellent interpersonal and team working skills, and keen to see young people succeed.

Where:  Sewua, Kumasi, Ghana

What: Head of Chemistry at a Secondary School in London

The idea of setting up Ghanaian Young Professionals UK came to me in 2017, when I looked back at my career and wondered what else I could have done.

Although my family and friends, in particular Rosemary and Edna have been a big part of my career journey, I felt I would have loved to have someone who knew more about my subject area and possibly of similar background as myself.

I asked my children, nieces, nephews, and children of my friends how many young Ghanaians they knew apart from family members.  It became apparent that the number ranged from one to three, so I felt something had to be done.

I am a member of SLOPSA UK, the alumni of the secondary school I attended in Ghana and I appreciate the benefits of belonging to such a group.  I discussed this idea with my good friend Mrs Rosemary Allotey who informed me she had been thinking of a similar venture.  Our vision is to create a thriving young professional group to share ideas and opportunities, receive mentoring and to socialise.

We have a WhatsApp group that was set up in June 2019 with over 100 members at present and still growing.  A database of experienced professionals has been set up to act as mentors and draw on their experience.  At our monthly meetings we invite experts to deliver skills workshops, give talks about their careers, challenges they faced, the lessons learned on the way and any advice they can pass on to the young people.
